The Story Behind the Painting
On March 15th, I had a realization about where I was in my grief after being in an emotional fog for a month.
On March 31st, I began this painting.
I wanted to strip everything away, both emotionally and stylistically. I chose colours that felt uncomfortable, yet intuitively fit together. The palette reminds me of childhood - of innocence, wonder, curiosity, and joy.
In the discomfort of my grief, I wanted to find that part of myself again. I wanted to find my way back to my inner child.
To get there, I had to peel back a lot of layers. I had to look at every part of myself until my inner child was the one looking back at me.
I originally painted the table a much softer pink, but it no longer reflected where I was or how I felt. As I peeled back those layers, I found the confidence to take up space in a room. To stop explaining myself or justifying every move I made, every word I spoke, and every feeling I felt.
Although there is strength in softness, I felt the boldness of the yellow better represented the growth I was experiencing. The softness remains underneath as a reminder that it doesn’t prohibit us from being bold but guides us to that inner strength.
As for the subject matter in this painting it represents the women in my life, and the softness and power of female friendship.
Their kindness, empathy, creativity, vulnerability, emotional intelligence, and compassion have carried me through my grief. They continue to remind me that grief is not meant to be felt in solitude, it is meant to be felt as a community - around a table.
This painting is inspired by a photo my friend Veronika Lazar took of me and another girlfriend at one of our coffee meetups last year. We would bring our books but we always ended up spending the entire time chatting :)
This painting is an ode to your inner child, girlhood, and grief.
